Safer Driving Tips to Lower Car Insurance Premiums By Alex Gregory

The Government has put forward a number of proposals on the back of a road safety consultation focusing on reducing road deaths and reforming the driving test. Driving in a safer manner will not only keep drivers more secure but it can also lower their car insurance premiums.

Being a safe driver and enjoying cheap car insurance go hand in hand. Insurers base premiums on risk and if your driving record shows that you are a competent driver with no previous motoring convictions and years of no-claims then chances are you will be rewarded with a competitive deal.

So how can you drive in a safer manner and earn cheaper rates? Here are some tips:

- Avoid lane hogging: If you're driving on the motorway don't sit in the fast or overtaking lanes. Once you have passed another car, move back into the slow lane if it is safe to do so to prevent other drivers becoming frustrated by your lane hogging.

- Be aware of the conditions: Keep an eye on the weather before you travel. Make sure you adjust your driving style to the conditions you are presented with - this means slowing down on ice and snow.

- Don't tailgate: Keep a two second gap between your car and other vehicles so as not to appear aggressive and to create plenty of stopping time. Double this distance in bad weather.

- Never drive under the influence: If you're having a night out make sure you can get a taxi home or that you have a designated driver who will stay alcohol free.

- Prepare your journey: Plan a trip ahead so you don't get lost and find yourself on unfamiliar roads which could trip you up with hazards.

- Stay calm: If another driver performs an inexcusable act on the road take a deep breath and count to 10. Don't let road rage get the better of you.
